The Art of Character Comedy – With Angus McPherson

At S10567524_10152617816398875_335188239_npeakeasy HQ this Saturday night we will be hosting a comedian who takes to the stage in a way you may not expect.  Although Speakeasy HQ has hosted a huge number of comedians in its time, This Saturday it will invite character act, Mr Angus McPherson to the stage to perform a side splitting character comedy act!

So we thought we’d take the funny Scotsman aside and see what makes him tick, while asking him a bunch of questions about this Saturday Night’s show!

Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?
I mop floors and give relationship advice. Hopefully something the kids can learn from.

How did begin performing?
Mr McPherson who owned the local pool hall gave me a mop and pointed me towards the toilets when I was 15. I still have the same mop.

If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?
Myself. So when I saw me walking down the aisle I could scream “RUUUN!!! SAVE YOURSELF!”

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?
What makes anyone think I’ll be remembered in 100 years? I’m not even remembered now!!  When I came home the other night, my wife tasered me. Said she didn’t recognise me.

What will you be performing at Speakeasy HQ on July 19th?
Cleaning up spilled drinks and broken glasses… and staring at those burlesque girlies.  mmmmmm

Don’t miss your chance to see Mr McPherson live on stage, with his mop, at Theatre Nuevo!! Ticketing essentials: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=90026

The Comedy Prop Man – Mr Pengilly

Prop comedy10277628_10152152632843214_5800350743988421552_n is a rare and unusual art-form that takes a huge amount of skill, ability, and a liberal mix of genius and timing to make it work well.  On Friday night one of Australia’s most seasoned veterans in the artform, Mark Pengilly, will be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo’s presentation of Cinema, Stand up and Burlesque.  Along with a line up of four indie films, presented by their creators, and seven stand-up comedians including Mr Pengilly, and a chaser of burlesque acts, Mark’s presentation is tipped to be a stand alone that few can follow!

We took the brilliant inventor aside for a brief moment and asked him a bunch of questions to try and understand what’s in store for our fans this Friday night!

Who are you and where do you come from
Me…just south of mum’s belly button/ Glenelg S.A.

Name a comedian you’d love to meet (dead or alive) and where would you go with them if you had one day to kill with them?
Myself…after I’m dead because I’d have to be alive again to make this meeting possible. We’d go to a ‘reanimation non believers’ meeting and spend the whole day saying: “See?!!”

What’s your biggest achievement as a comedian?
Causing laughter.

What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on July 25th?
Comedy.(Audience sense of humour permitting)

The Many Knives of Miss Lucy La Parr!!

By Knuckles

Having a flawles10458324_723468144356228_6856213455319854567_ns body, stunning dance skills and a fan following like few others doesn’t seem to be enough for some artists, and we couldn’t be happier about it!!  On Saturday night Miss Lucy La Parr will be performing at Speakeasy HQ in a star studded lineup that includes over a dozen artists from just about every field of entertainment.  However, during the program we will be treated to a performance by Miss Lucy La Parr and will see first hand what has positioned her as one of Melbourne’s most prominent burly girls!  Along with her very obvious attributes it’s Miss La Parr’s ability to invent, create and contextualize her characterizations in her performances that literally seems to spellbind the audience as she shimmies, teases and performs. But don’t just tale my word for it – see for yourself this Saturday night!

So we took the stunner aside and asked her the famous five questions as we get to know her a bit better.

Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

I perform both Neo and Classic Burlesque.

How did you begin performing?

I began by performing on the basic stripper circuit, until a friend asked me to perform burlesque at her birthday party. I had been wanting to perform burlesque styled routines for ages but never had the right party/venue/environment to do so. Once I broke my burlesque cherry, suddenly all these doors opened up that I didn’t know existed before. And my burlesque career was born.

If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

Myself as a kid. So I can word myself up about a lot of things.

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

My legs.

What will you be performing at Speakeasy HQ on July 19th?

My knife burlesque act. Ever wondered how many knives a lady can smuggle in her outfit?

We can’t wait to see the many knives of Lucy La Parr on Saturday night!! Get your tickets online and avoid disappointment: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=87968

It has been an AMAZING ride so far!!!  Along with the usual gamut of Speakeasy events that we’ve produced, the launch of TWO venues in Melbourne and opening the doors weekly, we have yet again reinvented the wheel in a whole new way with the launch of Cinema Stand=up & Burlesque at our new theatre in Brunswick!

Based at 333 Sydney Rd Brunswick we hosted our first event last month, to a SELL OUT room. We played four amazing short films, by indie film makers who also spoke a little about their creations.  following the film makers were a cavalcade of comedians who left us rolling in the isles.  The whole night was topped off by the delivery of burlesque by some stunning starlets!

This month Speakeasy plays host to a Christmas in July at Thearte Nuevo with four new short films, SEVEN stand up comedians and a critically acclaimed performance of burlesque and cabaret by the outstanding Sophie deLightful!

The Burlesque Icon Presents Boylesque at Speakeasy HQ!

10551741_10152195058760036_903731827_n (1)3rd

.

Speakeasy HQ will be presenting a cavalcade of boylesque at Speakeasy HQ, as Madame ‘Mama’ Natalia takes to the stage!!

Paying tribute to the growing industry of Boylesque, Speakeasy HQ’s lineup on August 23rd will include some of the biggest names in the industry, all in one place, all on one program, and all presented by possibly the most experienced living Australian burlesque presenter, MC, performer and artist – Madam Natalia!!  With more stage hours and experience under her corset than just about any other burly girl who better to present the boys at our first Boylesque event?

So we took Mama aside and asked her a bunch of questions as she readies her shimmy and sets her sights on her Speakeasy HQ debut!

Tell us about your performance?

Insanity in a frame, disguised as cabaret, comedy and burlesque. I sing, I dance around and I smoosh my boobs in people’s faces. That’s pretty much it. Glamorous really.

How did begin performing? I had a market stall at a fundraiser for a local theatre group 7 years ago. They were having auditions for a musical on the same day as the market, and the guy at the stall next to me convinced me to try out. I sang ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Star’ (I was a preschool teacher at the time) and got a lead role. And one thing kind of led to another…

If you could10518867_10152195058745036_1152081093_n (1) meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

The Marquis De Sade. I think we’d get along just fine…

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

Fighting for art and freedom of expression, no matter what the cost. I don’t care if people like me or not as long as the art lives on.

What will you be doing at Speake asy?

Pretend10526620_10152195058735036_171295190_n (1)ing to host while perving on the performers and audience members.

Don’t miss the va-va-va-VOOM that only Mama can bring to Speakeasy HQ on August 23rd!!  Buy your tickets online and be a part of the magic!!

deLightful & The Marquise Arrive at Nuevo!!

With the ground swell of Sp10366114_10152435179844763_6367117006075376258_neakeasy Nuevo fans getting behind the launch of our first Cinema Stand-Up & Burlesque event at the new, Sydney Rd Brunswick, Theatre Nuevo, we are extremely excited about our next big adventure there on Friday the 25th!!

And like all good things, the best has been saved for last – with a deLightful desert of burlesque and cabaret being served up by the acclaimed duo act – Sass N’ Hide!!  After rave reviews in both London and across Australia, the stunning duo are going to be a HUGE hit at Nuevo!!

So – as the sexy, sassy duo sew on the sequins and polish up the pasties, we took them aside to ask them the famous five questions to give all our Theatre Nuevo fans a glimpse of what’s in store for them on Friday 25.7.14!!

Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

It’s easy to say that between us we are all things truly something extraordinary!  Rising from the fiery furnaces of two of life’s greatest pleasures – burlesque and cabaret – Sass N’ Hide, are on a mission to get you fired up! We bring forth all that excites, be it rhyme nor reason, and draw on our combined performance experience in a saucy collection of singing, dancing and that delightful bit in between (somewhere around the hips). The question remains… will you Sass, or will you Hide?

if you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

Betty Page – stereotypical answer but wouldn’t it be awesome to get into the mind of the woman who opened so many doors for us fetching felines??

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

That dredded goddess can sing!

What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on July 15th?

Sass N’ Hide are a deLightful duo who tackle the deliciously tasty troubles of sitophilia and compulsive eating.  Our new show “Beauty & the Feast” has proven hugely popular with our audiences and we’re really looking forward to bringing it to Theatre Nuevo! But to try and descibe it properly, I will just say that, as a murder is to crows, so a bakery is to Sass N’ Hide. You’ll never look at Vic Markets the same again…

We can’t wait to see Sass & Hide on July 25th!!  Remember to get your tickets online in advance to avoid disappointment!!  Ticketing Essentials:   http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=90026

The Master and Presenter of Melbourne’s Finest Comedy!

1800485_10152688812297575_28634857_n

On July 25th Theatre Nuevo will present another outstanding lineup of comedians in its next Cinema Stand-up & Burlesque event!  After the sell out showing in June we have been extremely luckily to be able to secure the amazing and gifted Andrew Brown, who will be performing stand up in the line up of comedians in the middle set!

So we took Mr Brown aside and asked him a bunch of questions as he cleans out the Gallery and ets his shtick into gear for the next Theatre Nuevo on Sydney Rd Brunswick!!

Who are you and where do you come from?

My name is, and always has been, Andrew Brown.  I grew up in country-ish Victoria.  Not so country that you marry ‘into’ the family but country enough that you don’t pay any attention when you see wildlife or cattle in town.  I’ve since lived in several suburbs of Melbourne since.

Name a comedian you’d love to meet (dead or alive) and where would you go with them if you had one day to kill with them?

I’d have to say Robin Williams. And… I guess… part of the reason I’d love to meet him is because it wouldn’t really matter where you went with him – he would be the experience anywhere you went.

What’s your biggest achievement as a comedian?

Organising and MC’ing a charity event for a sick little girl’s family. We raised about $4,000.  In the world of art, performing and Australian stand-up comedy its extremely rare to earn a single dollar – let alone that kind of money.

What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on July 25th?

A selection of my finest (cough) stand up comedy.

We can’t wait to see the stylings of Mr Brown, one of Melbourne’s best known and heavily followed comedians at Theatre Nuevo on July 25th, at 333 Sydney Rd Brunswick!!

Speakeasy HQ Presents – The Spirit of Michael Jackson!

As Speakeasy HQ prepa10439055_1516224788599511_8554813182443695077_nres for yet another heavy hitting, big name in entertainment to take to its stage, we brace ourselves for one of the most truly unique performances to ever grace our stage!  The one and only Daniel Flanagan has become known as one of the most well rounded, polished and entertaining Michael Jackson tribute artists.  As he prepares to headline at Speakeasy HQ this Saturday night with an exert from his stage spectacular, ‘Spirit of MJ’ we took the master moon-walker, and man in the mirror aside to ask him a few questions about how he became one of the leaders in a global field of highly skilled tribute

entertainers.

Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

My performances are entirely about presenting the essence of Michael Jackson in a form that is as real for my audience as anyone alive can make it.  I spend a lot of time channeling my energy, refining my the magic, and to transport my audience into a live experience they’ll never forget. To say “this is the affect that Michael had on myself and so many others. This is his legacy.” When I perform it’s not about duplicating the King of Pop. I’m not trying to be like him, but am more or less looking to pass on his spirit of his art, life and incredible messages. I feel very lucky to be able to do what I do. He was my mentor, I was his student. This is his message… This is my tribute.

How did you begin performing your amazingly unique style of show?

I started dancing from a very young age. Young to the point where I don’t remember how I started. However I do know that Michael Jackson was a huge part of that influence. Throughout the years that followed I spent hours, days, months and I guess even probably years in front of the tv in order to perfect myself. Rewind, play, slow-motion, pause, rewind – I’m not sure what drove me nor where I was going with it at the time, I just knew that I had to be able to move like that too… Until it all became easier than breathing to me. I never thought I would do anything with it. I had no ambition for my dance for a long time, and dancing became just my own little world to escape to when the pressures of life proved too much to handle. It was only after the passing of MJ I felt really compelled to do something about it.  I feel very fortunate for the support that my followers and fans have given me.  It would be easy to think that since Micheal Jackson is now passed away that the interest in him may also fade.  However, the opposite seems to be happening and the demand for my shows has grown continually over the past years.

if you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

I’d probably like to  meet Elvis. Not just because you weren’t expecting me to say that, but because he also was one of those ‘one in many billions’ of people who changed the world through his dance, song and art.. But of course I would also have to say that I would love to have met Michael Jackson. That’s all I ever wanted up until the devastating news of his passing in June, 2009. I would have loved to have thanked him for his life of making art, music, all he did to promote so many new ways of performing and so on. Although he wouldn’t have realised it, I’d like ot have thanked him for teaching me – in more ways than just dance – how to view the world in a different way. To never judge, to always find the good in people,to remain humble, and that above all, love is the answer to everything. I would have liked to have told him that he was never alone. That I could feel his pain. That I know what it’s like to be different. That I understand that no matter what you do you cant please everyone and gain their love in return. I would’ve liked for him to know that every time he got cut,it was me that bled.

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

I’d like to be able to pass on some of what I do to others.  I love working with other artists and producers to make shows and products that I wouldn’t have been able to create on my own.  So when Speakeasy HQ came and asked if I’d perform as the headline act of a vaudeville program, although it’s not usual for a tribute artist, and presents a lot of new challenges, I’d like to be remembered for the end product which will be something that no other tribute performer has been able to do, and will hopefully inspire others to try new things, cut new paths and to share their experiences.

What will you be 10385375_1511664992388824_3767566012245139954_nperforming at Speakeasy Nuevo on July 15th?

On July 19 I will be performing a ‘Dangerous’. It’s a lesser known song to the the people who say “I don’t mind a bit of MJ”, however, the-die hard Jackson fans eat it up. It’s an opportunity upon my Speakeasy debut to showcase not only some stunning choreography that I’ve been developing for the past 18 months as a broader section of my up coming stage show ‘Spirit of MJ’, but the dedication that goes into emulating the phenomenon that is Michael Jackson.

We can’t wait to see the the most Dangerous artist to ever take the stage at the Underground Galaxy of Stars – so get your tickets online NOW to avoid disapointment!!
