Performing a beat cross section of Burlesque, Boylesque and Gorlesque Fillix’s look, style and skill as a performance artist are breathtaking to say the least!! After performing at the ever popular 2014 Speakeasy HQ Legends of Boylesque event he commanded thunderous applause for his jaw-dropping act!!

So we grabbed the man that scared the Grimm Reaper and asked him a few questions to see what makes him tick!!

Who are you and what made you want to perform as you do?

In reverse order; Because I WANNA!! And… Fillix.

What was the first moment when you thought to yourself… ‘I could go pro at this!!’

When people payed me

Jazz That Makes the Heart Stop

20140827-204246.jpg
This Saturday night Speakeasy HQ will present a jazz singer who really needs to be seen AND heard to be believed!!

Collin McKenzie is an American singer, now living in Australia, who has built a following around Melbourne recently for her smoky voice, stunning good-looks, blatant charisma and charm. We were fortunate enough to be able to engage her to perform at Speakeasy HQ a month ago and were blown out the door by what she unleashed on our audience.

So, in an attempt to get a glimpse into the workings of a truly gifted and international artist, we took Collin aside and asked her a bunch of questions to see what makes her tick.

Who are you and what led you to becoming a singer?

My name is Collin Mackenzie. I’ve been blessed to be singing most of my life. I’m influenced by awesome music, great singers and innovative artists.

What was the first moment when you thought to yourself… ‘I could go pro at this!!’

When i was in high school. I took a trip to NYC and saw Rent on Broadway. It was overwhelming. I realised I wanted to sing and be a performer. I wanted to make people laugh, cry and everything in-between.

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years time?

I don’t care if i’m remembered. I just want to have love, a joyful life and good friends and family.

If you could spend a day with one famous person, from history or now, who would it be and what would you do?

Not to be cliche, but it would be pretty amazing to meet Robin Williams. I’d want to go to a theme park, then play some zelda then listen to jazz while we have dinner and chat.

What will the audience see when you perform at Speakeasy HQ?

Good music, with comedy and theatricalism.

We can’t wait to see and hear Collin McKenzie live at Speakeasy HQ this Saturday night!!

Getting Back to Funny!!

20140826-221355.jpg
This Saturday night Speakeasy HQ will be hosting one of the biggest hitting 10-act vaudeville lineups we’ve ever had at the Underground Galaxy of Stars. In the lineup of talent will be a vast array of talent from all parts of the entertainment spectrum including one of Melbourne’s funniest female comedians, Nikky Barry!

After levelling rooms around Melbourne recently with her entirely relatable, every day scenario humour, Barry is about to turn her wit to the HQ stage.

So we took the comedian aside to ask her a few questions and see what makes her tick as she readies her Schtick for Saturday’s show.

Who are you and what led you to becoming a comedian?

I’m Nicky Barry. I was introduced to the Goon Show, Monty Python and many other classic comedy acts by my dad. I have always loved comedy and then I began using humour in my “day job” many years ago to help people cope with their problems and feel a sense of connection to others by sharing a bloody good laugh.
Oh and 18 years of enforced Catholicism (thanks mum and dad).

What was the first moment when you thought to yourself… ‘I could go pro at this!!’

After years of being “the funny chick” at parties and doing a handful of gigs, I entered a competition called “Search for a Funnybone” in 2013 and won. The response from the audience was fantastic and convinced me to keep working at it.

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years’ time?

Sage episodes of willful disobedience.

If you could spend a day with one famous person, from history or now, who would it be and what would you do?

Jay Gatsby (yeah, I know he’s not real but this is my fantasy). We’d just spend quality time hanging out with 300 or so of his closest friends and do our bit to redefine decadence.

What will the audience see when you perform at Speakeasy HQ?

My comedy is all about the wrongness that can be found in even the most benign situations. And rude things. LOTS of rude things.

We can’t wait to see the funny side of life with Nicky Barry this Saturday night.

Tickets are very limited so get on like and secure your seat at: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=87968

Magic Heart Throb Hits HQ

20140826-135950.jpg
Each month about 400 people pay to see a vaudeville show at Speakeasy HQ. So we therefor take our role to present our audiences with top shelf entertainment very seriously. As a result we’ve searched high and low to find the acts that make audiences react. But there is at least one act on the bill for this Friday who can truly take credit for making the audiences react to his shows; but in more ways than one.

Known as one of the most dynamic, skilful and entertaining street magicians alive, Jordy Doust has accrued himself a cult following of female fans who can’t seem to get enough of him and global fans who follow him in hoards through Speakeasy HQ’s social media. Having movie-star good looks also helps his cause along nicely, but the charisma, charm, stage presence and enormous bank of skill that Jordy possesses leaves his audiences literally spellbound.

And now, with a band new Speakeasy HQ DVD in the pipeline for release later this year, Jordy is the man that other men want to be like and the man women want to be with!

So we took the man with the magic hands aside and asked him a bunch of questions to see what makes the magic for him as he prepares for this week’s show!

Who are you and how did you get into show business?

I’m Jordy and I’m a global citizen. I guess my show biz entry was more of a gradual thing than an instance. I loved something and strived to be good at it, and here I am.

what are your big influences in life?

I have an amazing, supportive and kind father. Having a support base like that behind you makes you so much more prepared for the world and what ever it throws at you.

if you could spend a day with any person from history who would it be and what would you do with them?

I’d hang out with Harry Houdini and I’d jump of the Princess Bridge with him.

What will you be performing at Speakeasy HQ on Saturday?

I’m going to do an amazing mix of comedy and magic. That will leave you in stitches and astounded.

Don’t miss your chance to see Australia’s greatest street magician live at Speakeasy HQ THIS SATURDAY!! Tickets are running out fast so get online NOW!!

Comedy Brings the Man

1238126_10202192197825593_954808742_nOn Friday August 29th Speakeasy Nuevo will dish out its August installation of Theatre Nuevo with Cinema, Stand-up & Burlesque. After a huge downpour of talent from four of Melbourne’s brightest rising movie makers, who will be personally presenting their short-movies and meeting the audience, we will be ushering onto the stage a whole new round of talent with SEVEN stand-up comedians!!

As a shining example of all that is clever, funny and ironic, this month we will be featuring an outstanding Melbourne comedian who has more material than Spotlight stores!  We speak of course of the hilarious Kirk McKenzie, who will be performing stand-up comedy on the 29th.  So we took Kirk Aside and asked him a bunch of questions to see what makes him tick as he prepares for the big event!

Who are you and what led you to becoming a comedian?

Kirk McKenzie – When Michelle Lorrie was yelling at me about how I’d never go anywhere in this industry. She was right and I it was the birth of a delusion that would dominate the rest of my life.

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years time?

The comedian who bought peace to the middle east and fathered Brook Satchwell’s children.

If you could spend a day with one famous person from history or now who would it be?

Brook Satchwell or Peter Singer

What will the audience see when you perform at Speakeasy HQ?

A train wreck, I really need a pot dealer who doesn’t sell ice…

With all that in mind make sure you get your tickets to all the action and pandemonium live!!  Visit: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=90026

The Boylesque Superstar to Shine

20140821-153651.jpg
With this Saturday’s Legends of Boylesque Show at Speakeasy HQ shaping up to be one of the biggest we’ve hosted to date, every head is turning to try and get a glimpse of the headline act!!

Typical to form, we’ve saved the very best till last, and kept aside a truly fabulous act for the headline performance. Known as the Boylesque Superstar, Timothy Christopher Ryan has gathered a fan base like few others could dream of, through his costuming (or lack thereof), his oratorship, comedy and striptease.

So we took Boylesque’s Peter Pan aside to ask him a bunch of questions while he readies his Isis wings.

Who are you and what led you to becoming a performer?

I am Timothy Christopher Ryan and I became a performer because I enjoy communicating through my physicality. I perform so as to normalise sexuality, to embrace the human body and rejoice in life.

What was the first moment when you thought to yourself… ‘I could go pro at this!!’

When I performed my physical poetry to a collection of drunk people and they were captivated.

How would you like to be remembered for in 100 years time?

I’d like to be remembered the experiences I offered through my large immersive theatre shows that I create.

If you could spend a day with one famous person, from history or now, who would it be and what would you do?

I’d love to spend a an afternoon with Miley Cyrus! Together we would take tea, discuss fashion and eat a whole chocolate mud cake off a mans abs.

What will the audience see when you perform at Speakeasy HQ?

The audiences will be educated in the human body through a revealing and exposing speech. And I’ll teach them all about grinder through some acrobatic story telling with my two hairy chested back up dancers.

We can’t wait to experience all that TCR has to expose, reveal and deliver this Saturday night!!

Speakeasy HQ gets Food Porn Artist!!

20140820-074447.jpg

On Saturday night Speakeasy HQ will host some of the biggest names in Boylesque as the stage rips open muscle, sequins, comedy and song in the Legends of Boylesque show.

Champing at the bit to take to the stage as a main feature of the Boylesque program will be a porn star unlike any you’ve seen before!!

We took Matt Fennell aside to ask him a bunch of questions as he prepares for his performance at the underground galaxy of stars!!

Who are you and what led you to becoming a performer?

Matt Fennell. Melbourne based, North Qld born Comedian | Cabaret Artist | Singer | Actor | Joy Seeker | Verjuice Devotee | Melbourne’s King of Food Porn | Maggie Beer’s Crazed Professional Fan.

What was the first moment when you thought to yourself… ‘I could go pro at this!!’

Though I’d had a long career in Music Theatre and Cabaret, it was my first comedy gig 2 years ago at “Comedy at The Dan” that made me think “Hey, maybe I can do this now!”. The MC was the wonderful Brad Oakes who asked me how long I’d been doing comedy for. I fessed up that it was my first gig and he told me he thought I’d been doing it for years. Comedy is such a different beast to anything I’d done in my career up to that point, but I quickly found a love for the immediacy standup offers. A comedy audience beats to a different drummer and I can’t get enough of their wackiness!

What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years time?

I’d like to be remembered for my ability to tell a bloody good story through song and for putting smiles on dials around the planet.

If you could spend a day with one famous person, from history or now, who would it be and what would you do?

Well, I’ve already met my idol Maggie Beer (and sang with her in her Barossa Farm Shop), but as a kid I always dreamed of meeting and working with English comedy goddess Joanna Lumley. We’d spend the day hiking through the Bhutanese Foothills, re enacting scenes from Absolutely Fabulous “Cheers Sweetie!”

What will the audience see when you perform at Speakeasy HQ?

A couple of thigh slapping naughty tales and a cheeky song or two. There may be tits*. *actual amount of tits may vary.

We cNt wait to see the amazing man himself performing live at Speakeasy HQ this Saturday!! Ticketing is essential so log onto: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=87968
