Mr Ron

20140508-165137.jpg

As far back as music hall and vaudeville goes back, the piano man has always been there. Billy Joel told the story well, and what kind of show would Speakeasy be running without one?

On May 17th we will have on our program not just any old piano man. We will be playing host to one of Australia’s best regarded and most accomplished tag time and honkey tonk pianists; Mr Ron!!

As he tinkles, croons, slides and plays, the man known also as the instrumental half of the world renowned Ilana Charnelle, will be delivering a substantial serving of piano man to the program.

So we took the man with the hands aside to ask him the famous five questions as he prepares to play on the 17th.

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

Pianist, crooner and boogie woogie voodoo meister, I perform the musical gems I love on my trusty kurzweil keyboard ( affectionately known as Kirsty)

2) How did you begin performing?

At school I relished any possible chance to perform, and loved being able to put on a show or play music that could move an audience. But it was really thanks to performing with the gorgeous Ilana Charnelle (another speakeasy regular and a jazz enchantress) that I got my first taste of Melbourne’s live music scene.

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

Probably the dog Hairy McClairy from the kids books of the same name. If only to exploit our relationship to meet the rest of his posse: Schnitzel Von Krumm, Bitzer Maloney and Muffin McClay. I’m not sure if Mr McClairy remains alive after all these years, however. No one is.

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

My abject refusal to picture an audience in their underwear, even when it is a matter of life and death (rare)

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

I will be bringing out some boogie woogie shuffles from New Orleans, some rags from Joplin’s charming collection and some sneaky originals! Can’t wait to see you there!

We can’t wait to see the full explosion at the Home of the Stars on May 17th!

Marjorie May Fair

20140507-211116.jpg

Cabaret is a tough gig. Requiring the ability to sing, dance, tell jokes and be a highly skilled all rounder, many have tried but so few have succeeded.

At Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th a rare and talented artist will be performing not only cabaret for us but a unique blend of burlesque , comedy and cabaret that has been described as genius! Marjorie May Fair’s material, skills and stunning good looks will be delivered with a slice of madness at the show, in the way she has become a Melbourne icon for performing. So we took the First Lady of cabaret aside and asked her the famous five questions:

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

I guess you could say I possess qualities similar to that of a witch. Therefore I steal, borrow, learn, kiss, create, manipulate and embrace many different skills; some tame, others distinctly messy. I’m constantly adding new ingredients to the pot and with a bit of hip, bump, jazz, cab-sav-aret, dance, vaudeville, sex, comedy, jazz and burlesque, lies an ingredient that links them all together. And that ingredient is storytelling.

3) How did you begin performing?

It started with Technology. The music channel blaring on the Television. Michael Jackson’s Black and White. I was three years old. It finished with me smiling throughout the entire song, whilst shaking my bottom and waving my hands in the air. I’ve always stood up for what I believe in; or rather danced about it!

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

I would definitely say Doris Day. She is one artist that I absolutely adore. She for me is the epitome of talent, beauty, and strength combined. What can I say, other than she really is so much more than the girl next door!

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

I would want to be remembered for spreading Smilism. A contagious religion that changes people’s lives, days and energies. One that should be practiced every single day, by all!

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

A comedy. Two feisty women. The Roaring 20s. A need to be satisfied. We all crave attention, but how far will one go to get what they want to spice up their lives? It’s a Pleasure VS Patience kind of game.

Don’t miss out on this scandalous act with my partner-in-crime, Miss Stephania Pountney! Seating is strictly limited.

Roy Maloy

20140507-205317.jpg

Known around the world as an Australian circus icon, and holding NINE extreme circus world records would seem like more than enough for one career. However, as per all our suspicions, it’s not enough for Roy Maloy.

On May 17th at Speakeasy Nuevo, Roy will be performing his new and yet unseen prop comedy show!!

This will be his first showing of a rare form of stand up, and will be a sight to see, when we remember that 80% of his circus shows revolve around ‘breaking stuff, bending stuff and setting fire to stuff’ (ABC interview 2009).

So we took Maloy aside as he prepares his props and asked him the famous five questions to see what makes him tick!!

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

I’m a ‘male entertainer’ because I’m entertaining… And male… But seriously. I’ll be performing prop comedy at Speakeasy Nuevo.

2) How did you begin performing?

I was a teenager that knew very early what I loved doing. So I did it. And I was HUNGRY too. I have literally never said no to a free show if I’m free because I love performing almost more than anything else in my life!

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

Possibly Big Chief Little Wolf, the iconic showman, wrestler and producer. I’d love to have travelled with him for a year to watch how he made theatre, how he presented, how he made arrangements for the shows he produced and to hear his stories.

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

In 100 years I want to either have a syndrome named after me, have died in a way that is so catastrophic that the news plays it for ever like the twin towers going down or for having invented a cure to something that people didn’t know they had, didn’t actually have, but we’re convinced I’d found the cure for it anyway (we can call my cure snake oil 😉 )

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

I’m going to be performing a new show I’ve been working on for about 2 years now. It’s a kind of stand up show, but it relies heavily on props, so it falls into the genre of prop comedy. It’s a tough one to perform but once you have all your props and the material is tight the audience loves it.

Don’t miss Roy Maloy performing prop comedy at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th! Seating is STRICTLY limited.

Byron Hutton

20140506-210147.jpg

At every vaudeville show worth it’s salt there is set aside one slot on the program for one artist to leave the audience with a sense of astonishment, admiration and excitement by what they can uniquely do that no one else can.

At Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th our headline artist will be none other than the man with lightning hands, Byron Hutton!! As a juggler he holds no equals but performing his high pace, skill and energy magic for our audience he is sure to leave our audience AMAZED!

So we took our headliner aside, as he counts, catches and cashes in all manner of juggling apparatus to ask him the famous five questions.

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

Juggling, juggling and more juggling, that’s basically it. Predominantly modern juggling with movement and dance involved.

2) How did you begin performing?

I did a show in front of the school band, which was socially risky at that age, but it paid off 🙂

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

The person who first invented juggling…

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

As the first juggler to get laid…. 😉 haha. But seriously…

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

I will be performing a high paced, 5 minute juggling piece that I first created to perform at the New Zealand Juggling Festival 2013, as the international guest performer.

We can’t wait to see Byron performing his world renowned act at Speakeasy Nuevo.

Ticketing information is at: http://www.trybooking.com/Booking/BookingEventSummary.aspx?eid=84323 and seating is STRICTLY Limited.

Skylar Delphinus

20140506-205457.jpg

Every now and then we meet someone who has a vague likeness to someone we know. Call it déjà Vu, or just the fact that some people look alike. However, once in a lifetime you’ll meet someone who is so spookily like someone we all know and love that it makes your heart jump into your mouth.

On May 17th one such artist will be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo – and her likeness will shock and amaze our audience. Performing burlesque on the night will be the dancer and vaudeville artist, Skylar Delphinus. And as our audience watches her performing some extremely high calibre dance, shimmy and tease it is the likeness she bares to the legendary siren herself, Marilyn Munroe that will blow you all away!! Big call. But we challenge one and all to prove it wrong and see for themselves.

So we took aside the bombshell as she readies her coursers for Speakeasy Nuevo and asked her the famous five questions as we get better aquatinted.

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

It’s old school meets modern with something naughty but nice. Paying tribute to her favourite musical Singing in the Rain.

2) How did you begin performing?

Before I remember walking I was dancing, so I assume that’s how it all began, in a navy leotard and wrap skirt refusing to wear socks with my ballet shoes.

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

To do a tap lesson with Fred Astaire due to his sheer athleticism and effortlessness. Any gems of knowledge from that man would be unforgettable.

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

I would like to be remembered as the bubbly girl with bright red lips who saw the world as her stage.

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

A subtly sultry burlesque routine.

We can’t wait to be whipped into a frenzy of tease at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th by Skylar!

TCR

20140506-204922.jpg

At Speakeasy Nuevo we have had possibly more emails about one artist than all the others combined. We speak of course of the one and only Boylesque Superstar, Timothy Christopher Ryan!

Performing regularly for heading toward a year with Speakeasy now, at ALL of its different locations, TCR has become one of the biggest draw cards of all our artists if for no other reason than he has, to this day, never performed the same routine twice, while performing over two DOZEN times!!! Very few artists in the world could ever boast such a wide variety of skills and material as he does!!

So we took the Superstar aside from his usual duties of polishing his shoes, seeing on sequins and ironing his Isis wings to ask him the famous five questions!

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

I am a storyteller. Focusing on physicality and complimenting it with the voice, I communicate fantasy fueled stories that originate from a not to distant reality of mine.

2) How did you begin performing?

The first performance I ever remember performing was a dance I created for my grandmother set to the song ‘I’m a Barbie girl’ by Aqua.

3) If you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

The one person I’d love to meet in my life would be a clone of myself. I think I’d really enjoy my own company. And oh what a time we would have together.

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

I would like to be remembered for my grand immersive performances. Artworks that brought people away from their T.V.’s and computers and encouraged them to play within the interactive art.

5) What will you be performing at Nuevo on May 17th?

Timothy Christopher Ryan presents something rather intimate. It may offend some and it may arouse others. Jump in bed with Timothy as he presents a performance devised purely from his own sex life. A man who loves the idea of sex but is bored by the act it… Time to spice things up a little.

We can’t wait to see his newest adventure in the flesh! For more information and ticketing log into:

Janeen From Clarinda

20140501-192218.jpg

Over the time Speakeasy has been making with the magic at the Home of the Stars we’ve seen some pretty big names pass over our stage.

Four world record holders, a superstar, some of the biggest names in circus, vaudeville, burlesque and comedy have performed for our audiences. But on 17th May Speakeasy Nuevo will play host to an unusually talented comedy, cabaret, vaudeville and satire artist. There simply isn’t a single category to put her in so we are somewhat stumped to try. But suffice it to say that no artist has ever worked harder to get a spot on the stage of a vaudeville program than Janeen of Clarinda!

Wanting nothing more than to perform her burlesque routine for our adoring Speakeasy Nuevo audience Janeen will hopefully be the dark horse in the race as she shimmies, shakes, cleans and shines her way to stardom!!

So we took the First Lady of Kingston aside to ask her the famous five questions as she refills her bottle of Bam!!

1) Tell us about your performance; what do you perform?

I’ll be performing my alter-ego “Janeen from Clarinda”. It will be a ‘snip it’ of my self-devised show “Janeen from Clarinda” cabaret.

2) How did you begin performing?

“Janeen” was created a few years ago at a surburban Burlesque night.

3) if you could meet one person alive or dead who would it be and why?

I know “Janeen” would looooooove to meet Jimmy Barnes. Everyone loves a bit of Barnesy!

4) What would you like to be remembered for in 100 years?

That bogans are people too.

5) What will you be performing at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th?

A bit of comedy and singing.

We can’t wait to bogan it up with the groove at domestic engineer alive!!! Don’t miss your opportunity to get in fast as tickets are STRICTLY limited.

Vaudeville at it’s best!

20140428-221657.jpg

We were recently sent in an image by one of our regular Speakeasy audience members. She is a huge fan of history and vaudeville, and has been to nearly every show we have ever put on since Speakeasy began!

What she sent us was fascinating because it proved a point we had long suspected. In her email she sent us a picture of a vaudeville poster from a 1949 vaudeville show. What we found fascinating was how little vaudeville has changed but how much our audience has changed!

In the poster, the big words read ‘8 Acts Vaudeville!’ From what we can gather from the internet and researching the artists on the program they were also reasonably well known artists for their time. The theatre was a decent size also and to all intense purposes this was a big city show, with a clear intent to produce a show that the masses would tell their friends about and love! (Picture shows the RKO in 1943)

As we head toward the production of the last, monthly, Speakeasy Nuevo show we look at the shows from the last hey day of vaudeville and are excited by what we see! Not only are our audiences literally rushing to the online ticketing system to ensure that they get a seat at the events, but the shows we are presenting them eclipse the standards of the mainstream productions of American 1940’s vaudeville!

On May 17th Speakeasy Nuevo will present line up that concists of 14 acts! The theatre will not only seat an audience in an environment that is every bit as stylish and elegant as any theatre from any part of history, but with the addition of a suite of VIP tables that affords an added air of opulence, decadence, food, wine and an experience that has no rival. The performances given at Speakeasy Nuevo will be presented by world record holders, celebrity singers, awarded tap dancers, comedians with mass followings of their own and presented all on the same stage in a glorious cavalcade of performances that will literally leave any audience with their mouths wide open and cheering for more. Our selections of wines, champaigns, beers and ciders are complemented by the adition of the world renowned Speakeasy Slingshot and Roy Maloy’s Snake Oil!

We can’t wait to see you all on the 17th, and know that you will go crazy for our line up of some of the biggest celebrities in Australian vaudeville today!

Boo Boo Bee Doo!

20140428-142010.jpg

Speakeasy Nuevo has presented some brilliant acts so far. In particular we have gone to a huge amount of effort to source the very best for one particular spot in our programmes. Each time Speakeasy Nuevo has thrown open its doors our audiences have paid huge attention to the act before the headline performance, and for good reason. Traditionally, this is the place where a vaudeville show presents the the burlesque artist. And wow, what a response our audience shows for its burlesque! So with good reason, Knuckles and the Gang have been extremely thorough in their search for only the very best in burlesque for our adoring audiences; and it looks like we’re about to hit yet another home run!

On May 17th Speakeasy Nuevo will present one of the burlesque artists that we’ve followed, wanted and been hoping to have on the ‘Home of the Stars’ Stage for a VERY long time! But now, finally, we are thrilled to say that Miss Skylar will be performing in the famous spot before the headline act!

However, it should be loudly pointed out that Miss Skylar isn’t ‘just’ a burlesque dancer. In Australian vaudeville it has to be said that she is truly a stand alone with skills that are truly elite in every imaginable way. As our audience watches Miss Skylar on the 17th of May they should take note that the reason Miss Skylar is known as one of the greatest at what she does is because she completed her Major Ballet Examination in BBO, holds an Advanced Diploma in Musical Theater and Commercial Dance, has performed extensively along the east coast from QLD to Vic and before performing with the extremely hot La Rogue Burlesque. However, when the lights grow dim, and the music begins to roar, our audience will be seeing for themselves why Miss Skylar is thought of as The Modern Day Marilyn, as Miss Skylar electrifies them with her piercing green eyes, kicks so high that they seem impossible for any but a ballerina with elite training and a magnetism that has to be seen to be believed!

Don’t miss your chance to see Miss Skylar at Speakeasy Nuevo on May 17th.
